Some of the best improvisers in Amsterdam gather to say goodbye to the one and only Chelsea Gill. Chelsea has performed and taught at Boom Chicago, but is now starting a new chapter in London. Art of the Outskirts
Doek Festival is an international event celebrating improvised music. This year’s festival, “Art of the Outskirts,” aims to spotlight artists and musicians in the outskirts of Amsterdam, Berlin, and Brussels.
This week-long event makes its way around Amsterdam, stopping at Sexyland on September 2nd for a night of improvised punk madness. The edgy improvisation night will feature duo Ornella Noulet & Ferdinand Lezaire from Belgium, the Amsterdam-based punk-rock band Yodel Queen, and Doek’s Cactus Truck. In addition to three live musical performances, Miri Lee will perform a dance that ‘embodies momentary images through the interaction of language, light, sound, and visual objects. The dance aims to activate images through the spiritual abstraction of the performers’.
Doek Festival strives to raise awareness about the importance of preserving unconventional spaces and supporting the new generation of local musicians in their artistic development. The festival will bridge the outskirts with the city center by involving local and international musicians in various performance venues across Amsterdam, including De Ruimte, Zaal 100, Sexyland, and Bimhuis. Join us to experience the exciting world of improvised music that thrives on the city’s outskirts and to explore the unique venues that foster this musical creativity.
Doek Festival #20, “Art of the Outskirts,” is for anyone living on the edge—both figuratively and literally! So, come join us. Let’s dance, stomp, party, and have a blast!
Artists:
Yodel Queen (NL)
The young Amsterdam punk-rock band Yodel Queen makes post-yodel schlager punk, while standing with their other leg in the confessional. Sharpen your ears and brace yourself.
Ornella Noulet & Ferdinand Lezaire (BE)
After years of experience in bebop, West Coast and modal jazz, French alto and soprano saxophone player Ornella Noulet has devoted herself with great dedication and passion to free improvisation and sound research. Playing the saxophone since the age of seven and having spent more than 12 years in French conservatories, she is currently studying at the CRB in Brussels. Her partner in crime, the Belgian drummer Ferdinand Lezaire, switches from brushes to mallets, from sticks to bare hands to harness the full textural and sonic power of his kit. He watches the music intently and his arms seem to play independently, responding to the music without being consulted.
Cactus Truck (NL)
Based in Amsterdam, this fire-breathing improvisational trio is comprised of bassist/guitarist Jasper Stadhouders, drummer Onno Govaert, and American-born saxophonist John Dikeman. The band plays a take-no-prisoners, high-energy brand of free jazz strongly influenced by the likes of Albert Ayler and Peter Brötzmann at their most intense (they also claim that their music includes elements of Delta blues, Japanese noise, and no wave). Cactus Truck self-released an eponymous CD-R in 2011 and followed that up with a 2012 cassette release (featuring Terrie Ex from the Ex) entitled Macho Sex; their first “official” album, Brand New for China!, arrived in March of 2012 on the Public Eyesore label. In late October through mid-December of that year, Cactus Truck stormed the United States with a massive 37-date tour that saw the trio tearing it up across the country, up the East Coast from Atlanta to Boston, across the Midwest and West, down the West Coast from Seattle to Los Angeles, and finally wending their way back east for three final dates in New York City. Selections from the tour (recorded at Squidco Records in Wilmington, Delaware with guest trombonist Jeb Bishop; Astro Black Records in Louisville, Kentucky; and the final show at JACK in N.Y.C. with guest trumpeter Roy Campbell) were featured on the Live in USA album, released in March 2013 by the band’s Tractata Records imprint in collaboration with the eh? Label.
Miri Lee
She is a choreographer and real-time performer who has been working with various artists in visual art, contemporary and classical music, science and media art. Currently, She has initiated to propose a real-time performance platform called Collectief Impography based in Amsterdam that is constantly researching with artists on sessions, workshop, regular performances and collaborations with other genres. Various experimental concepts approach the embodiment of elaborate images that are transformed through psychological abstraction into physical images which are inspired by the light, sound, language, and objects in real-time. She deeply focuses on individual times in significantly changing in the society with culture: what we have to adhere to or accept and discard or be abandoned at the boundary between changes and expansion in unknown, the axis that owns personal responsibility within in complexity, the individual concerns and thoughts for the extent of acceptance, limited choices that seem to be free. But she believes that creativity should be based on the diversity of individuals that is evoked by experiencing the flow of time at present with the identity as a spontaneous Doer without limitation.
About Stichting Doek
Doek is a collective of improvisers creating opportunities for experimentation, research and performance. Doek musicians share attitudes toward tactics, references, ancestors and antecedents in improvisation and push the musical practice forward in their many groups and ad hoc combinations. Through initiating, organizing and financing concerts, projects, tours and a yearly festival, Doek has become a central platform for improvisation. As a partner to established or emerging venues and organizations Doek exposes a broad public to a vibrant world of improvisation.
Doek received structural support from the Fonds Podiumkunsten (Performing Arts Fund) from January 2000 until December 2020. We are now dependent on project subsidies and public donations. So your donation is very welcome. So please donate via our donation page here: https://whydonate.com/en/fundraising/doek-festival-art-of-the-outskirts

My name is Sara Roos and I am a visual artist whose main focus is in filmmaking and photography. In my artistic practice, I often tell a story about an experience of mine in a way that conveys the emotions I felt going through that experience, but leaves room for other people’s own interpretation. For ‘Pink on the Spectrum’, I’m showing a short film accompanied by an installation.
‘Het Begin van Groeien’ (translation: ‘The Beginning of Growing’) is an experimental short film about growing up and feeling different in an environment where that is not appreciated and accepted. The protagonist of the film gets left behind, even though she tries to change herself for the people around her. Throughout the film, she goes through the motions of learning to accept herself for who she is and eventually braves the road to self-expression with the help of a chosen family.

Challenge your inner self in a liberating vomit of creation
The fluidity of our magazine is vital words, shapes, sound ideas materialized on paper, materialized digitally. Vox Nauseum started as a two-man show, extended to four and only growing more.
Ours is an independent magazine focused on a multimedia experience. It comes in a printed format but also online, where we play with different forms of expression such as music and video making. How much can you explore within the art sphere with just a booklet in your hand? We look to answer this question, stretching our minds and visions.
Vox Nauseum challenges one to spin, jump, stretch, distort, and challenge their inner self in a liberating vomit of creation. We focus on the natural, the carnal, the human, we seek to break comfort, to even forget about this concept. The nausea of creation is nothing to be feared, birthing a raw cultural entity.
The event
The goal of the event is to welcome the new edition of the magazine while also promoting the already existing numbers and strengthening a sense of community created around Vox Nauseum. We want to use the space to materialize the multimedia vision and create an immersing cultural experience. Within the Universe of our event, we want art to rule above all, to carry one in and out of the limits of their skin.
We want to separate the venue into two dimensions, the entrance and the belly of the beast, The entrance shall welcome one while also preparing them for the experience through visual elements. We plan to transform the venue into an Urban Forest reality - like a forest, artists are invited to work together, exchanging energy and ideas, helping each other, and growing together.
Young, old, shy, bold, generous at heart, and in mind, we welcome everybody but expect to have students with an interest in the independent art scene as the primary audience. We are bringing together three DJs and one performing act. To welcome the visitors, smoothen their transition from the outside world into our realm, to sing and dance until the end. The musical register is defined by tippy psychedelic sounds, with each artist pushing forward their understanding of it. We will include a video element, projected constantly throughout the event. As for promoting the material of the magazine, we want to invite the writers to perform their pieces on a live musical background.
Similar to a psychedelic trip but focused on nausea, Vox Nauseum encourages artists to pour their soul into their creation, a vomiting-purifying experience.

Elements is a party that is focused on the diversity of sound, much like the diversity of the elements. The elements that make up our atmosphere, our very natural environment, is what inspired this title.
From wind and fire to water and air, we are all constituted of combinations of fire, spice, and everything nice. However you are, however you exist, we accept all elements of you. This is our motto. This space is for people to express themselves and experiment with who they are. We want people to feel safe enough to explore what the elements means to them, so we hope to see funky make up and elemental inspired outfits.
Our DJs will be exploring different sounds throughout the night, from rave funk to slut techno, there are no boundaries or fixed genres. Alongside our DJs there will be art up on the walls for our guests to enjoy as they explore the element of sound.

‘Songs For Bad Dancers’

MOTHER TONGUE
One of the most exciting bands of today that poetically seizes the moment with full fire and lyricism from different musical languages. With Mola Sylla on vocals and percussion you can expect compelling, surprising and rhythmic music. Born and raised in Dakar, Senegal, Sylla grew up in the tradition of the griots. Griots tell stories, sometimes embellished with music, theater and dance, and play an important role in the culture of West Africa. Sylla plays here together with Amsterdam whirlwind Oscar Jan Hoogland, keyboard player and last student of the late impro legend Misha Mengelberg, and with the Korean Amsterdammer Sun-Mi Hong, absolute virtuoso on the drums who performs in various formations (ao with her own Sun-Mi Hong Quintet).
Mola Sylla – vocals, percussion | Oscar Jan Hoogland – electric clavichord | Sun Mi Hong – drums
GREETJE BIJMA & RAPHAEL VANOLI
Greetje Bijma has been active for decades in improvisation, jazz and electronics with countless solo works and collaborations from De Noodband and Jasper van ‘t Hof to Oceanic and many more. This celebrated Dutch avant-garde artist will embark on a musical adventure with sound magician and guitar whisperer Raphael Vanoli, who has toured all over the world and played with heavyweights such as Jameszoo and Slagwerk Groep Den Haag.
Greetje Bijma – vocals | Raphael Vanoli – guitar
SOFAYA
Bringing a breath of fresh air to the Amsterdam improv scene, South African trumpeter James McClure has formed a new band called SOFAYA as part of SITProductions. In search of the rich and diverse culture of South African music, the octet embraces its compelling grooves and melodies. SOFAYA wants to bring out these characteristics in different styles by playing existing compositions from different generations.
James McClure – trumpet | Joao Guerra – drums | Zenzele Mthembu-Salter – bass | Marta Warelis piano | John Dikeman tenor sax | Diana Dzhabbar alto sax | Lethal Beets trombone | Christian Chandler trombone
EVE RISSER
Eve Risser is a fresh, authentic and inspiring French musician, composer and arranger of jazz and improvised music. With the flair of her hometown of Paris, she has a unique way of playing the piano. In April she won the North Sea Jazz Paul Acket Award 2023. Her music fuses fantasy with feminism, drawing inspiration from nature, for example in her Red Desert Orchestra.

A night to platform young creative DJ’s from Amsterdam
A DJ night of mixed music from different genres hosted by Amsterdam’s emerging young artists. We would be working with people within our close contacts circle as the line-up: tripbird, Insulinde, Zoe Janice, DJ Marcie Marc in order to give them a platform to perform at an amazing Amsterdam location. A couple of these artists have already played at Sexyland, others have recently played at Sissi’s, Kanaal40 etc.
Music genres for the night include R&B, Hip Hop, Garage, Trance, House and Techno. To go with the music that night, we will also create visuals that we will project onto the walls of the space - we would work with a local graphic designer to ensure it looked as great as possible!
All (21+) ages, all backgrounds and cultures, hence also the diverse line-up and music genres! We want to create a fun environment that feels friendly and welcoming - very in keeping with the Sexyland way!

Due to the tragic earthquake in Morocco, we have decided to establish a Riso Print Shop that will be open during the festival. Here, we will collaborate with the artists involved to sell prints, with all proceeds going to charity.
During the festival each space is uniquely curated, focusing on different aspects of Moroccan culture. These spaces showcase the intricate and varied narratives that define Moroccan identities. From traditional melodies to contemporary art and food, you’ll encounter a rich diversity of creative expressions in every corner.
Full program and more information will follow soon.

People will sell collection of clothes they no longer use, and then we will invite people to bring their clothes they no longer use to swap them out for something they like. We want to sell tickets: 10-15€ if you bring no clothes, 5€ if you bring 1-5 item, and free (or 3€) if you bring 5 or more items. This should encourage people to bring more clothes and refunnel them back to the community. It can also extend beyond clothing into vinyl, accessories and other things that are in good condition but people might want to swap out. There is a DJ that plays some upbeat and funky music. The idea is to refocus our energy and efforts on sustainable resource use while having fun together and building community.

My work deals with topics such as belonging, physicality, group dynamics and the human body, which is wrapped around my experience as a trans* person and careleaver*. I am largely influenced by other human and non-human encounters and I am fascinated by inter-human relationships. Currently my projects take all kinds of forms, the main ones being drawing, performance, zine making, textile work and video. I hope eventually others can relate and reflect through experiencing my work on their own realities and lived experience, maybe even feel seen or confronted. I hope to spark emotions and create the feeling of connection with my art practice.
The painting and small performance I will be showing, titled ‘toes’, is an attempt at visualizing how I feel, experience, and perceive the world around me and myself as a nonbinary and neurodiverse person.

No Limits!
No Limits!

We are Aniketh Khutia and Vinícius Cardoso Witte, co-founders of Content Care. Our initiative is rooted in the decolonial framework, a powerful lens for reevaluating established ideas. We take concepts commonly encountered in conversations and apply this framework, sparking inquiries that challenge colonialism and capitalism.
Aniketh primarily engages verbally and through theory, while Vinícius, with his artistic background, introduces creative exercises to explore these ideas. Drawing inspiration from decolonial-feminist practices, we focus on combating epistemic violence and building a non-imperial world.
In the spirit of thinkers like Donna Haraway and Anna Tsing, we aim to “stay in trouble” and create a space for “contamination.” Our participants become collective influencers, embracing a shift from individual narratives to collective action. We encourage embracing differences, vulnerabilities, and failures as opportunities for playful engagement with the world and each other. Join us in reconfiguring our perspectives and taking collective actions for a more inclusive world. <3
As DJs, we often perform back-to-back, blending our completely different musical styles to create something extraordinary. This synergy is where our party comes to life. We’re all about embracing diversity and contrasts in performance and music production, showcasing the beauty of unpredictability, guaranteed fun.
Our lineup is shaping up with exciting prospects: live percussion sets, Noise, Brazilian funk, and experimental techno. We’re in discussions with artists who embody the Latinx and global South edge, fostering decoloniality through play and practice. Stay tuned for updates on our confirmed lineup, posted on our Instagram @caringforcontent. Join us for a musical journey where boundaries blur, and the unexpected rules!
